This is one of the most common questions we are asked.
There isn’t one answer for anyone, but here are some things to consider and some recommendations.
- It is almost always cheaper to repair a computer than it is to buy a new computer.
Sure, you can find a new computer for $300, but who wants a bottom-of-the-line slow computer that won’t last? We recommend middle-of-the-road computers. You can find a good middle-of-the-road desktop for around $500. Also keep in mind that in addition to the cost of the new computer is our fee for transferring your data and settings over and getting it all set up for you. That fee is currently $150. So the cost of a decent desktop computer is around $650. You can use that figure in comparison to the repair estimate to decide if you want to fix or replace your computer. Of course, some people want, or need, a more beefy computer, a laptop, or an All-In-One and that would cost more.
- If your computer has Windows XP or Windows Vista, we recommend replacing it unless you can’t afford a new computer. In that case, we can certainly repair it for you.
- Should you get a desktop or a laptop or an All-In-One (AIO)?
You should get a desktop (tower) unless you want or need portability or if you want to save desktop space or reduce the number of cables around your computer. You should only get a laptop if you really need (or want) portability. That’s because laptops generally cost more, don’t have as good of performance as desktops, don’t last as long, and cost more to repair.
If you want to save desktop space and reduce cables, consider an All-In-One computer. Like laptops, they cost more than desktops and their performance isn’t quite as good as desktops. But if you want to save space and reduce cables, you can’t beat an All-In-One.
- Should I get a Used or Refurbished Computer?
If money is tight, a used or refurbished computer can save you some money. But watch out. A lot of used computers are way overpriced. Some only have a 90 day warranty. Get one with a 1 year warranty. Some used computers are ancient computers that really shouldn’t be in service anymore. A good place to buy used computers is Discount Electronics (www.discountelectronics.com). When shopping for a used computer, make sure it has Windows 7 or Windows 8. Also make sure it has at least 4GB of RAM. We also recommend that you avoid Celeron, Pentium, and AMD processors.
