Downloader Infections

November 5, 2010

There are many different types of infections that can infect your computer. Today, I want to talk about a specific type of infection called a Downloader. A downloader is a special type of infection. If your computer was infected with a downloader, you probably wouldn’t even know it because there would be no visible sign of infection. A downloader can sit on your computer for months without doing anything. But at some point, the downloader will receive a command from its creator. The command will tell it to download and install one or more other infections onto your computer. Once the downloader installs other infections, you will probably be able to see signs that your computer is infected.

Often times, security software, or a computer technician, will remove the obvious infection, but will miss the downloader infection. This is because most downloaders are difficult to detect and find. They can also be very hard to remove. We recently saw a large number of systems infected with something called ThinkPoint. In almost every case, it turned out that ThinkPoint was installed on the system by a downloader. And it wasn’t the same downloader either. There are lots of different downloaders out there and a lot of them download the same infections.

So we wanted you to be aware of this so that you understand that just because you don’t see any signs that your computer is infected, doesn’t mean it isn’t infected. That’s why it is so important to have good security software. We also recommend that you set up your security software to update as frequently as possible and to scan your computer every night. Even more important is for you to be very careful when reading email and visiting websites. Better to prevent and infection before it infects your computer than to be able to remove it later.
